New to Needlepoint

Needlepoint is a timeless craft—both relaxing and rewarding. Whether you’re completely new or returning to stitching, our canvases are designed to feel intuitive, approachable, and enjoyable from the very first stitch.

What You’ll Need

To begin stitching, you’ll need a few essentials:

  • A Needle & Nest canvas
  • Thread of your choice
  • A tapestry needle
  • Small scissors
  • A frame or hoop (optional, but helpful)

The Basic Stitch

The most commonly used stitch in needlepoint is the tent stitch.

To begin:

  1. Bring your needle up through one hole of the canvas
  2. Cross diagonally over the intersection
  3. Insert your needle down into the opposite hole

Repeat this motion to build your design, working row by row.

Choosing Thread

There are many thread options, each creating a slightly different look and feel.

Some common choices include:

  • Wool blends for a classic, soft finish
  • Silk blends for a subtle sheen and smooth coverage
  • Cotton for a crisp, matte look

Thread choice is personal—there’s no right or wrong.

Preparing to Stitch

To begin, thread your needle with a length of thread no longer than 18 inches.

Where Should I Start Stitching?

Begin near the center of your canvas—rather than at an edge or corner—and build your stitching outward in connected areas. Avoid stitching one color at a time, as this can lead to an uneven finish.

Following the Design

Use the printed canvas as your primary guide as you stitch.

If you come across an area where colors don’t align perfectly with the grid:

  • Refer to your printed reference chart
  • Use it to determine stitch count and placement

This guide is simply there to support you—there’s no need to aim for perfect precision.

Ending your Thread

When you’re ready to change colors, end your thread by weaving it under a few stitches on the back of the canvas to secure it in place. Trim any excess thread, avoiding knots to maintain a smooth finish.

A More Relaxed Approach

Needlepoint isn’t meant to be exact.

We encourage you to:

  • Trust your eye
  • Embrace small variations
  • Enjoy the process

Each piece will naturally reflect your own style—and that’s what makes it special.

Finishing Your Canvas

Once complete, your canvas can be transformed into a pillow, ornament, clutch, keychain, or framed piece—the possibilities are truly open to whatever you envision.

We recommend working with a professional finisher to bring your piece to life.
